Castle Drogo, the last great country house to be erected in England, was built by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Julius Drewe. Work started in 1911, but building was not completed until 1930. Holy Trinity Church, Beckenham, Kent was built in 1877 in his memory and that of his wife Mary by their youngest son, Francis Peek. His portrait, with those of his wife Mary and daughter Mary Drew nâee Peek, hangs in the dining room at Castle Drogo, Devon, the seat of the Drewe family.     Only child of John and Mary Francis of London, whose family is said to have left Wales for France at the time of the first peace with Napoleon (27 March 1802) and has never been heard of since, except through reports that some of the members had left Paris and settled in the south of France. An aunt of Mary Francis was married to a French doctor (name unknown).
