An original director, with his uncle by marriage, Francis Saxham Elwes Drury, of Francis Peek & Co. Ltd. which was formed in September 1913 to act as Secretaries and Agents for a number of rubber, tea and coffee (and other products) plantation companies in the Dutch East Indies (mainly in Java and Sumatra). Wilfred Daukes held his directorship for 39 years until his retirement in 1952 and was elected Chairman in the year before he retired. In recognition of his many years' service in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) he was appointed Commander of the Order of Oranje Nassau by Queen Juliana of The Netherlands in 1951. Baptised Blackawton 27 October 1566, son of a Richard Peke who may possibly have been the Richard Peke (Peike) (c.1543-1593/94) , although there is no evidence that the latter ever married.
Robert Peke is mentioned in the Blackawton Manor Court Roll for October 1597 as having stood pledge for his presumed cousin Richard Peke when the latter took his inheritance of the tenancy of the Abbotsleigh property from his father John. In the subsidy rolls Robert Peke is assessed for goods at Halwell in 1599/1600 and for a substantial amount of land at Blackawton in both 1609/10 and 1627/28. In the last-mentioned entry he is described as 'dead'; he was buried at Blackawton in 1627. His marriage to Willmot Collins had taken place there on 11 July 1584. Baptised March 1618 at Halwell. Married first to Christian, who bore him one son, Richard, and three daughters before dying between 1647 and late 1649. Nothing is known of Christian or of Richard Peke's second wife Anne, whom he must have married in 1648 or 1649. It was Richard and Anne Peeke's younger son John (born 1657) who was great-grandfather of John Peek of Hazelwood. Richard Peeke, who is described as "of Abbotsleigh" in the Blackawton registers, was Constable of Halwell in 1647 and almost certainly churchwarden there in 1635. Born at Halsenwood (Hazelwood) Villa, Loddiswell, 3/10/1782. Lived at Kingsbridge and Plymouth during his youth, moving to London around 1800 to join the tea firm of Sanderson & Barclay of Old Jewry. In 1821 he joined his brothers William, who had launched out on his own as a tea broker in the City of London around 1810 (under the style of William Peek & Co), and James, who was aged 21 and had arrived in London from Devon only recently, to form the new firm of Peek Brothers & Co., which was eventually to become the top firm of tea brokers and wholesale tea dealers in the country. The firm's offices were for many years at various addresses in the City of London until it took over No.20 Eastcheap around 1842. Here the firm and its successors were to remain for the next one hundred and thirty years.
On 21 December 1829 Richard Peek was elected a member of the City of London Corporation, and on 25 June 1832 he was chosen High Sheriff of London and Middlesex for the year 1832/33. Shortly afterwards he gave up his partnership in Peek Brothers & Co. and retired to Loddiswell to develop the Hazelwood estate and to devote himself to charitable and religious causes in his native county. He built a number of schools and chapels. Magistrate for Devon. Died unmarried at Kingsbridge 7/3/1867 and buried in the Peek Catacombs at Hazelwood. Commemorated in Loddiswell Church by an alabaster pulpit. Bequeathed Hazelwood to his nephew William Peek (1812-1897) of Devonport. See Walford's "County Families". Born Halwell 1 November 1657, second son of Richard Peeke of Abbotsleigh and his second wife Anne. Married to his first wife, Mary Robbins of Cornworthy by licence at Harberton, Devon, 22 April 1680. Harberton vicarage was annexed to the living of the parish church of Halwell; Harberton is also near Ashprington, where members of the Robbins family lived. The marriage licence was issued by the Bishop of Exeter on 19 April 1680, and the accompanying marriage bond dated 21 April 1680 (now in the possession of the Devon Record Office) was signed by John Peeke and his friend and bondsman Leonard Wadland of Halwell who was a brother of the Grace Wadland who married Richard Peeke ("the younger"), John Peeke's half-brother, as his second wife. After Mary's death in August 1690 John Peeke married another local girl, Mary White, at Cornworthy on 17 April 1694. Both the Robbins and the White families apparently owned considerable property in the Cornworthy area, and no doubt John Peeke benefited through his two wives.
All the children of John Peeke's two marriages were baptised at Cornworthy. Two of them, John and Joseph, were also buried there. Susanna, the eldest child, was married to John Brookins at Cornworthy on 6 November 1707. | Peeke, John (I1684)
