F.L.S. A solicitor of 5 King's Bench Walk, Temple, and partner in the firm of Peek and Downing of 10 Basinghall St, London. Freeman of the City of London (July 1861). He retired from practice in 1864 and devoted the rest of his life to social and legal advisory work in Brighton, where he lived at Walton House. He was also much attached to the study of marine biology and published several papers on the subject of ichthyology. As a result of his strong interest in this branch of natural history he was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society on 21 April 1864. He died at his country residence.

In 1855, at the age of nineteen, he joined his father and others in the firm of Peek Bros and Winch of Liverpool as a junior partner. This firm then opened up in London at 23 Rood Lane, City, in direct competition with the original firm of Peek Bros & Co, tea brokers, of 20 Eastcheap, London, E.C. In 1874 Peek Bros and Winch moved to 3/4 Fenchurch Street, City. On the death of William Peek senior in 1870 Francis Peek became senior partner, and the London firm changed its name to Francis Peek, Winch & Co. In May 1895 a limited company was formed under the style of Peek Bros and Winch Ltd to incorporate the businesses of all the firms mentioned above. The head office of the new company was to be no. 20 Eastcheap, where Peek Bros and Co. had been established since c.1842; the building had been reconstructed in 1874 to form the present Peek House. This remained the head office of the company and its successor, Peek, Winch & Tod, Ltd, until recent years.
Francis Peek was appointed first Chairman of Peek Brothers & Winch Ltd in 1895 and held the appointment until his death in 1899. His portrait was hung in the Board Room at Peek House. He was also Chairman of the Howard Association and the James Peek Trust for a number of years. He is reputed to have given over half a million pounds during his lifetime to charitable and religious causes. These included the building of four churches for his sons-in-law in Holy Orders. One of these churches was Holy Trinity, Beckenham, Kent, built in 1877/78 in memory of his parents, William and Mary Peek. Another portrait of Francis Peek hangs in the vestry there.

In June 1895 the Rev. Richard Peek saved the life of a young French girl who jumped overboard from the ferry midway between Dinard and St. Malo, Brittany, and was subsequently awarded the bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society and the Gold Medal 1st Class of the Sociâetâe Nationale de Sauvetage de France. Ronald Kidd (11 July 1889 - 13 May 1942) was a civil rights campaigner.
Born in London, England, the son of surgeon Leonard Joseph Kidd, grandson of doctor Joseph Kidd, and nephew of doctors Percy Kidd and Walter Aubrey Kidd, Ronald Hubert Kidd had a variety of jobs before finding his vocation as a campaigner against injustices in 1930s and 1940s Britain.
In 1934, angered by Police responses to hunger marchers, he founded the Council for Civil Liberty (later the National Council for Civil Liberty, or NCCL, now known as Liberty), which included such figures as E. M. Forster as its President and Clement Attlee, Aneurin Bevan, Havelock Ellis, Aldous Huxley, J. B. Priestley, Bertrand Russell, and H. G. Wells among its vice-presidents.
Please tell us your name and what you do at Liberty. My name is Ronald Hubert Kidd, and I was the first General Secretary of the National Council of Civil Liberties. In fact, I founded it, with my partner Sylvia Crowther-Smith, and the help of some very distinguished men and women.
What did you do before that? Lots of different things - I studied science at University College in London before serving in the war. I was discharged because of poor health, and I became secretary at the Wellcome Medical Museum for a while. Then I joined the civil service, working in the Ministry of Pensions until they cut pensions for 'shell-shocked' world war veterans - after everything those men had endured! I resigned in disgust. For a while after that I was a freelance journalist (where I made some contacts which were very helpful in the Council's early days) and an actor - that's how I met Sylvia, she was working as an actress. In 1933 I was working in publishing and running a little bookshop on the Strand.
How would your friends describe you? Well, my friend and associate Claud Cockburn once said I was a “saint-like man… who looked like the canon of some rather forward-looking diocese”, which was frightfully good of him. I think it's the glasses.
Have you always been a campaigner? Oh yes - before the war I joined the campaign for women's suffrage, and also gave lectures for the Workers' Educational Association. Sylvia and I joined many demonstrations against the Nazis, and of course I was always in support of the hunger marchers. Inequality appals me, and throughout my life I have refused to tolerate it.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Injustice spurs me to action, and although I have never thought of myself as any sort of celebrity I am pleased to have been able to inspire others. Together we have achieved remarkable things, and I am terribly proud to see Liberty going from strength to strength, 75 years on.

An original director, with his uncle by marriage, Francis Saxham Elwes Drury, of Francis Peek & Co. Ltd. which was formed in September 1913 to act as Secretaries and Agents for a number of rubber, tea and coffee (and other products) plantation companies in the Dutch East Indies (mainly in Java and Sumatra). Wilfred Daukes held his directorship for 39 years until his retirement in 1952 and was elected Chairman in the year before he retired. In recognition of his many years' service in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) he was appointed Commander of the Order of Oranje Nassau by Queen Juliana of The Netherlands in 1951. John Robert Ekins, a son-in-law of Wilfred Daukes, was appointed a director of Francis Peek & Co. Ltd. in 1960.
