Peke, Richard

Notes:

The earliest proved ancestor of the Peeks of Hazelwood. Although his parentage is not known and no record of his baptism has been found, he must have been born around 1594 and almost certainly at Blackawton, Halwell or a neighbouring parish. He was married on 1 August or 1 September 1616 at Blackawton to Jane Tucker, who was baptised there on 21 January 1594/95 and a member of a family long resident in Blackawton. He may have been the Richard Peke named as a juror in the Blackawton Manor Court in September 1619 and April 1620. In 1625/26 and 1627/28 he was assessed for goods at Halwell. He was probably the Richard Peke who was churchwarden at Halwell in 1635. Although the date of Richard Peke's death is not known this must have taken place before 1641/42, as he did not sign the Protestation Roll at Halwell in that year. His three children were born at Halwell in 1618, 1620 and 1626.

Richard married Tucker, Jane in 1 Aug OR 1 Sep 1616 in Devon, Blackawton. Jane (daughter of Tucker, Nicholas) was born in 1594/5; died in 1665/66; was buried on 17 Mar 1665/66 in Devon, Halwell. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Baptised March 1618 at Halwell. Married first to Christian, who bore him one son, Richard, and three daughters before dying between 1647 and late 1649. Nothing is known of Christian or of Richard Peke's second wife Anne, whom he must have married in 1648 or 1649. It was Richard and Anne Peeke's younger son John (born 1657) who was great-grandfather of John Peek of Hazelwood. Richard Peeke, who is described as "of Abbotsleigh" in the Blackawton registers, was Constable of Halwell in 1647 and almost certainly churchwarden there in 1635. He signed the Protestation Roll at Blackawton in 1641/42.

Elder son of Richard Peeke (1618-1686/87) of Abbotsleigh by his first wife, Christian. Baptised Blackawton 30 November 1643. Constable of Halwell in 1673. Paid tax on 2 hearths at Halwell in 1674. Married twice. His first wife was Susanna Smith, daughter of Wilmott Smith; they were married at Halwell on 7 January 1666, and their son Richard was baptised there on 2 March 1667/68 a few days after Susanna's death and burial at Halwell at the end of February 1667/68. She may have died in childbirth. If, as one must assume, the dates of Susanna's marriage to Richard Peeke and her burial at Halwell are correct, then it would not have been possible for them to have had another child unless they had had twins. The Blackawton register records the baptism of a daughter Susanna to a Richard and Susanna Peeke on 20 October 1663; this may have been a misreading for 1668, but it is hardly likely that the daughter Susanna would have been baptised eight months after her mother's death when the latter's known child Richard had already been baptised at the time of her death. In any case Richard Peeke married his second wife, Grace Wadland, at Blackawton on 6 September (or possibly November) 1668 and had at least two more children by her. Grace Wadland was the sister of Leonard Wadland (junior) who acted as bondsman for Richard Peeke's half-brother John Peeke when the latter married Mary Robbins at Harberton in April 1680. The Blackawton Manor Court Rolls make several mentions between 1704 and 1707 of a Richard Peeke, his wife and (presumably) daughters, while a survey of the manor made c.1700 mentions a Richard Peeke occupying a farm called Sweetson valued at ¹60 and a widow Peeke's tenement at Abbotsleigh valued at ¹33. Presumably these are all references to the Richard Peeke described in this note, his son Richard and his second wife nâee Grace Wadland, who no doubt continued to occupy the farm at Abbotsleigh after her husband's death

Born Halwell 1 November 1657, second son of Richard Peeke of Abbotsleigh and his second wife Anne. Married to his first wife, Mary Robbins of Cornworthy by licence at Harberton, Devon, 22 April 1680. Harberton vicarage was annexed to the living of the parish church of Halwell; Harberton is also near Ashprington, where members of the Robbins family lived. The marriage licence was issued by the Bishop of Exeter on 19 April 1680, and the accompanying marriage bond dated 21 April 1680 (now in the possession of the Devon Record Office) was signed by John Peeke and his friend and bondsman Leonard Wadland of Halwell who was a brother of the Grace Wadland who married Richard Peeke ("the younger"), John Peeke's half-brother, as his second wife. After Mary's death in August 1690 John Peeke married another local girl, Mary White, at Cornworthy on 17 April 1694. Both the Robbins and the White families apparently owned considerable property in the Cornworthy area, and no doubt John Peeke benefited through his two wives.

All the children of John Peeke's two marriages were baptised at Cornworthy. Two of them, John and Joseph, were also buried there. Susanna, the eldest child, was married to John Brookins at Cornworthy on 6 November 1707.
